AI: The Superpower Your GIS Toolbox Has Been Missing

Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept for GIS professionals — it's a practical, accessible tool reshaping how we collect, analyze, and interact with spatial data. This session explores real-world AI applications in a regional planning and transportation GIS environment, drawing on hands-on experience integrating AI into everyday workflows.


Examples include: using AI to generate Python scripts for GIS functions; automating real-time data collection with ArcGIS Notebook Server; building natural language interfaces to create geospatial features in ArcGIS Pro; and leveraging AI with Survey 123 to analyze field-collected photos.


We'll address both the potential and limitations of AI in GIS, including accuracy, data privacy, and the continued importance of professional judgment. You'll leave with actionable ideas and a clearer sense of where AI fits — and where it doesn't — in the modern GIS toolbox.

From CIS to the Meter: GIS Work Order Integration at OCWD

In April 2024, Oldham County Water District implemented Software Solutions, Inc. (SSI)’s VIP customer information system as the backbone for customer service, billing, and work order management. At the same time, the district wanted field staff to work from accurate, map‑centric views of the system and to have work orders flow seamlessly between the office and the field. This session will walk through how Oldham County Water, in partnership with Bennett & Williams Environmental Consultants, connected SSI VIP with the district’s enterprise GIS to create a GIS‑based, mobile work order workflow.
 
We will outline the technical design used to link customer accounts, service locations, and assets across systems, taking advantage of VIP’s GIS integration and work order capabilities as well as Esri’s mobile applications. The presentation will highlight how work orders are created in SSI, spatially located in GIS, dispatched to the field, completed on mobile devices, and then synchronized back to the CIS and asset records. We will also discuss data governance and quality control: address standardization, unique identifiers, and routines for monitoring, correcting, and editing GIS components using mobile apps WorkForce, Survey123, and Dashboards so that both systems stay aligned over time.
 
Attendees will leave with a practical pattern they can adapt for their own utilities—particularly small and mid‑sized systems—covering lessons learned, pitfalls to avoid, and incremental steps for moving from siloed CIS and mapping systems to an integrated, GIS‑driven field work order environment.

The PreGISP Program

The GIS Certification Institute (GISCI) awards the GISP, the leading professional certification for GIS practitioners in the United States. Achieving the credential requires passing a rigorous exam, documenting at least four years of relevant experience, and signing a code of ethics.


To support emerging professionals, GISCI—together with the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS)—has developed the PreGISP exam. This standardized assessment provides GIS students with an early credentialing opportunity that bridges academic study and professional certification, leading to the new GISP-E (Emerging GIS Professional) credential.


For academic institutions, the PreGISP serves as a nationally recognized external assessment tool. For students, it offers early professional recognition and a clear pathway toward full GISP certification.


This session will present the PreGISP exam blueprint, based on an industry-aligned body of knowledge, and discuss how the exam integrates into diverse academic programs. The PreGISP program / GISP-E certification officially launched in Spring 2025.

A GIS Approach to RUSLE2 Sediment Erosion Modeling

The RUSLE2 (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation 2) is a modeling framework developed by the USDA to estimate soil erosion due to rainfall. It considers soil erodibility, slope, slope length, land cover, average rainfall, and erosion best management practices to calculate soil loss.
 
This presentation covers how Environmental Solutions and Innovations adapted the RUSLE2 model to be utilized spatially inside ArcGIS Pro to model the impacts of a proposed natural gas pipeline. These results were used to support environmental permitting, evaluate best management practices, and estimate potential turbidity impacts to nearby streams during construction. Attendees will learn how a traditional erosion model can be implemented inside GIS and watershed analysis, sediment modeling, LiDAR analysis, trace networks, and Python scripting will be covered.

Automating Field-Level Metadata Population in Esri Geodatabases Using FME and Excel

Maintaining complete and accurate field-level metadata in Esri geodatabases is a critical but often tedious component of data governance. Manually populating attribute definitions for every field in ArcGIS Pro is time-consuming and prone to inconsistency, especially on large or frequently updated datasets. This presentation introduces a streamlined, repeatable workflow that leverages FME Workbench and Microsoft Excel to automate the injection of field-level metadata into FGDC CSDGM-compliant XML, eliminating the need for manual entry through the ArcGIS Pro metadata editor.

The workflow begins with schema and metadata documentation developed collaboratively with data stakeholders in a structured Excel template. FME Workbench is then used to read the Excel metadata, remap attribute columns to FGDC-standard XML element names using the AttributeManager transformer, and merge the results into an exported metadata XML file via the XMLTemplater transformer. The completed XML is imported directly back into ArcGIS Pro, populating the Fields section of the metadata record with definitions and sources for each attribute. Additional steps address field alias management through an ArcPy Jupyter Notebook script, and a quality control check using the ArcGIS Pro Generate Schema Report tool ensures field names match between the metadata Excel and the published feature class.

Attendees will leave with a practical, replicable approach to scaling metadata workflows across their organization, reducing manual effort while improving consistency and compliance with data governance standards.

By pairing mobile GIS with sub-meter to centimeter-level GNSS technology, organizations can significantly enhance positional accuracy, reduce rework, and increase confidence in enterprise GIS datasets. The session will cover configuring Field Maps, connecting external GNSS receivers, capturing accuracy metadata, and applying data validation tools to support quality control.
 
A concise utility-focused case study will highlight practical considerations such as hardware selection, correction services, coordinate systems, post-processing, and field staff training. Road centerline and address point examples based on NENA NG9-1-1 GIS data standards show how attribute rules can automate repetitive tasks such as assigning address information, maintaining street and address fields, updating parity and ranges, and populating boundary attributes. Maintenance and Enrichment of the Kentucky Geological Survey Landslide Inventory

Geologic hazard databases can be powerful tools for data analysis and research, providing insight into high-hazard areas, infrastructure impact, risk reduction, and weather context associated with landslides. The strength of this research depends on data quality and consistency. To meet these needs, the Kentucky Geological Survey Landslide Inventory has recently undergone significant additions and updates, including utilization of outside data sources such as public reports and social media. The inventory now contains multiple GIS layers, including mapped landslide extents (polygons), additional points, and landslides associated with specific storms. We have standardized attributes across the datasets to facilitate and improve the inventory’s usability. Public access to the inventory supports the work of multiple stakeholders, such as emergency managers, planners, and researchers. Maintenance and growth of this inventory are crucial to support landslide research within Kentucky.

The Evolution of GIS in Bobwhite Conservation

The Northern Bobwhite Quail and associated grassland species have faced persistent, long-term population declines, demanding conservation strategies that are both targeted and evidence-based. To meet this challenge, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) launched a statewide planning effort in the early 2000s, with GIS as a cornerstone for mapping habitat conditions and tracking vegetation change over time.


This presentation traces a decade of habitat mapping at KDFWR (2010–2020), examining how evolving imagery, expanding data availability, and advancing analytical methods drove workflow development and shaped conservation products. We compare outputs across multiple platforms and data sources, highlighting key differences in accuracy, scalability, and utility for on-the-ground decision-making.


That foundation set the stage for what comes next. Dymaptic partnered with the National Bobwhite and Grassland Initiative Foundation (NBGIF) to transform how conservation is planned, tracked, and delivered. Using ArcGIS Field Maps and Notebooks, on-the-ground management activities are automated into an enterprise resource platform (ERP) that connects conservation planning directly with financial tracking. As NBGIF and its partners continue to explore how technology can strengthen relationships with private landowners, the potential of this system is only beginning to be realized.


Together, these two phases illustrate how sustained investment in GIS practice evolves over time, with mapping remaining central while expanding into the full arc of conservation delivery, from project planning to financial tracking to landowner engagement.

What Counts? Mapping Monuments and Memorial Spaces in Kentucky

The Monuments Workshop at the University of Kentucky is a Mellon-funded intiative designed to integrate legal expertise into efforts to improve the monument and memorial landscape in Kentucky. One of the project’s early goals was to make aggregated, geolocated data about monuments and memorial sites accessible to cultural workers and community practioners. Current national and regional public data is often incomplete, dated, and reflective of larger systemic gaps and inequities. This work details the challenges in defining and quantifying monuments and memorial sites in Kentucky, as well as the protocols and collaborations generated by the project.

24/7-(M)365: GIS Support Modernized and Automated with Microsoft 365

Providing quality GIS support 24/7/365 is a key goal for the KYTC GIS Team. With a growing customer base and limited resources, this is a challenge.  
  
We approached this challenge by building a scalable, automated support framework using Microsoft 365 tools, including Teams, SharePoint Online, Power Automate, and Planner. We also modernized our SharePoint Online GIS support site to better connect our customer community with the resources they need.  
  
This presentation will outline how we designed and implemented this continuous support system. We’ll share how Power Automate helps us triage application requests, and how it automates processes like Teams notifications, Planner task creation, and application access approval notifications. We will also discuss the importance of modernizing customer support resources. 
  
Attendees will leave with a practical, replicable approach for automating GIS support and operational workflows - empowering stronger geospatial connections without writing a single line of code.

This presentation focuses on recent and upcoming acquisitions managed by Kentucky’s Aerial Photography & Elevation Data Program, commonly known as KyFromAbove. This ongoing effort acquires, maintains, and distributes high-resolution aerial photography and LiDAR-derived elevation products for the entire Commonwealth. Provision of an openly accessible, seamless basemap, including current color leaf-off aerial photography and LiDAR-derived elevation data, reduces the cost of developing GIS applications, promotes data sharing, and streamlines many state agency business processes. The program’s strict adherence to data standards, long-term stakeholder collaboration, use of economies of scale purchasing, and distribution of data resources in the public domain are the basis of its success. An overview of unique use cases, new ways to consume KyFromAbove oblique imagery, and Phase2 elevation derivatives will also be highlighted during the session.

Mapping the KY / TN "Blackbird War": Spatially Reconstructing Historic Avian Depredation (1974–1992)

Between 1974 and 1992, ~  38 million “blackbirds” died, mostly in Kentucky and Tennessee from 83 applications of the surfactant PA-14 (“tergitol”). This project geographically locates these "bird kill events" (BKEs) using ArcGIS Pro, Alteryx, and other tools. By triangulating sparse archival records — e.g., local newspaper articles —with sometimes inaccurate federal and research reports, this project translates disparate historical data into spatial visualizations.
The analysis locates the regions, methods, and magnitudes of the kills, noting how local accounts justified them as public health and crop protection measures even as the use of Huey helicopters gave the operations a performative, militarized quality. The presentation will explore the use of GIS tools to verify omitted site details and analyze the "success" rates of these events. This session demonstrates the power of mapping to document human-wildlife conflict and the ecological consequences of mass eradication programs.

The Green River supports exceptional freshwater biodiversity and recreation across more than 300 miles of Kentucky mainstem, yet systematic spatial tools for waterway stewardship and public access planning have been limited. This presentation describes how the Kentucky Waterways Alliance and University of Louisville Center for Geographic Information Sciences collabotrated using geospatial tools (GEE, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro) to build an integrated suite of watershed-planning tools. We will walk through how we explored river access suitability from existing sites, modeled waste tire accumulation risk at the subwatershed scale, explored outputs with drone surveys, and designed community-facing reporting tools that turn public observations into actionable spatial data. The result is a practical workflow connecting geospatial processing, field verification, and public engagement, showing what a small GIS team can build using public data.

Branching Out: Building a Smarter Arboretum

This summer 2026 project aims to bring the Rowe Arboretum into a more modern, easy-to-use digital environment. We’ll start by turning existing paper records into a centralized system and building a complete inventory of the arboretum’s roughly 4,000 plants. With the help of an intern, each plant will be mapped using GPS, creating an accurate, interactive view of the landscape.
Along the way, we’ll add helpful plant details and introduce simple tools to track maintenance and day-to-day work. The goal is to make information easier to access and manage for staff, while also creating a public dashboard that allows visitors to explore and learn more about the arboretum. A separate internal dashboard will support operations by organizing work orders and improving overall efficiency.

GeoParquet is an emerging, cloud-native geospatial format built on Apache Parquet that enables scalable, high-performance access to spatial data. This presentation introduces what GeoParquet is and why its columnar design supports efficient workflows through column pruning, partial reads, and spatially partitioned data access. Using transportation datasets as examples, the talk demonstrates how GeoParquet was tested and consumed using Python, integrated into APIs and analytical scripts, and shared directly from cloud storage. The session highlights GeoParquet support in Esri and QGIS and provides guidance on where the format is most effective, where it is a poor fit, and how it can be incorporated alongside existing GIS workflows.

Exploration of Generalized Raster Data Applications

Raster datasets are best known for their ability to provide insight for qualitative analysis by displaying continuous data. While raster data is sometimes used in a quantitative capacity with histogram analysis and classification, raster generalization is a less explored methodology for deriving quantitative metrics from raster datasets. Raster generalization in this context refers to the act of averaging the value of cells in a raster dataset within a user-defined geography to derive a single numerical value. This session will cover the use of this methodology in my research project "Analyzing Remote Sensing Vegetation Indexes to Optimize Corn and Soybean Yield", Python scripting to achieve raster generalization, and other possible applications for this methodology.

Geoprocessing on Demand: Using KyFromAbove in the Field

KyFromAbove hosts statewide aerial imagery and elevation data. Many users consume KyFromAbove as a basemap, but the data can do far more when wrapped behind a geoprocessing service.
This presentation looks at how the Division of Geographic Information is exposing this content through RESTful geoprocessing services, both on-premises and in the cloud, accessible via a URL from any device or application. With a simple request, a field user can pull the closest oblique images for their location, identify the highest and lowest points, or measure land cover change over time.
We will walk through a few examples of the backend architecture, demo a few tools and URLs, and share our plans for the future of geoprocessing on demand.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are the backbone of accurate location information in 9-1-1, and they are essential at the call-taking level because every decision starts with “where.” 9-1-1 Telecommunicators rely on mapping screens all day, every day to validate caller locations, visualize wireless Phase II/NG9-1-1 location data, and confirm the correct address or landmark when callers are confused, panicked, or unable to speak. These maps help call takers quickly see jurisdictional boundaries, hydrants, access points, and routing information so they can send the right units to the right place with minimal delay, which directly impacts response times and outcomes. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is the official and authoritative repository for U.S. place names and their geolocations, commonly used in topographic maps. Two feature classes are assigned to landforms which rise prominently above the surrounding landscape: pillars and summits (https://www.usgs.gov/us-board-on-geographic-names/gnis-domestic-names-feature-classes). The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) has developed interactive story maps covering geologic tours of natural areas, KGS collections, projects, and annual reports, and geologic features across the state. This presentation showcases these digital products and provides a deep dive into KGS’s Kentucky Arch Trail story map.
Kentucky has more natural arches than any other state in the Eastern United States (>3,000). The Kentucky Arch Trail highlights 40 accessible natural arches across the state and includes arches in popular destinations like Carter Caves State Resort Park, the Red River Gorge Geological Area, and the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The associated story map provides geologic context on arch formation and serves as a digital trail guide.
Attendees will learn best practices for creating accessible, engaging geoscience web applications serving public education and scientific research.

At the heart of the Development Hub is the Kenton County Development Tracker, an ArcGIS Experience Builder App that enables users to search, filter, and explore active development projects. Prediction of Soil Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity using CoGTF Framework for Kentucky

Saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) is a critical soil hydraulic parameter governing water flow and solute transport, yet its direct measurement is time consuming and spatially sparse. This study develops and evaluates a geotransfer function using a Random Forest (RF) model trained on a global compilation of Ksat measurements to predict Ksat across Kentucky, with external validation against field- sample soils from three land cover types; agriculture, grassland, and deciduous forest. The RF model was trained on 19 environmental covariates derived from remote sensing and global soil maps (SoilGrids, MERIT DEM, WorldClim, MODIS, PROBA-V, JRC Global Surface Water). Then the Ksat value was log transformed so that a standardized comparison can be made. Internal validation was performed on a 20% test set with Ksat of all depths and through spatial block cross validation (blockCV). The model was then applied to Ksat at 19 field across Kentucky, where laboratory measured Ksat from the different depths of horizons are available for independent validation. The internal validation showed that global model performed well on internal test set (R² = 0.816, RMSE = 0.409 log₁₀ units). Variable importance indicated that sand content (15.5% IncMSE), mean annual temperature (14.8%), clay (13.8%) and temperature seasonality (13.2%) were the dominant predictors. However, external validation for Kentucky sites will help to confirm the strong systemic performance of the model. Further depth‑stratified modelling from multiple depths within the profile will be conducted to capture depth‑related variability.
